Here is a perfect athleisure outfit from running errands the other day. In case you are wondering what athleisure means; it is basically a new word combined of athletic and leisure to describe the clothes that are athletic looking yet worn for leisure. If you were not familiar with this word, then that is ok, because it was just recently added to the dictionary.
The movement of athletic leisure clothes has been growing in the last few years rapidly that it got even its own name. Women are all about the comfort these days. Leggings have replaced jeans for women; which was a fashion staple for many years.
I read an article few days ago from Business Insider, on how the sales of jeans have plummeted, and that the companies are adding a whole new department in their stores; the athleisure department. According to the Levi’s CEO their sales went down from 7.5 billion to 4 billion, and he admitted that the company is “threatened by the athleisure trend of wearing yoga pants” (Business insider)
And when you think about the movement, it all totally makes sense why we want athletic looking stylish clothes. I read another article few months ago, how women are working longer hours, and spending more hours taking care of their families, than they did fifty years ago when they didn’t work, so it just makes sense to wear these cute athleisure clothes. The best part about them is the easiness of getting dressed when you are in a hurry, and have a tons of errands to run, yet they will always make you look nicely put together.
I remember myself few years ago, before the athleisure outfits became a “thing” I ditched my jeans for leggings and athletic tops, and they became my everyday attire. At that time the trend was fairly new, and I would always get asked if I was going to the gym? And I would just politely say, no, this is just my style.
How to style perfect athleisure outfit
So how do you rock this athleisure look? You want to start with a great pair of leggings. Plain black leggings are the most versatile so they can give you a variety of choices when styling them, and they are the most popular choice for the majority of us. If you are more brave, then try leggings with interesting design details, like cutouts or mesh around the ankles, or fun prints and colors. It totally depends on your style.
For cooler temperatures, a light knit sweatshirt with front pockets and a hoodie is a definite must. It will give you a place to warm your hands, and a hoodie to protect you from the wind. To complete the look, go for a canvas sneaker, instead of a regular gym shoes, so the outfit is still somewhat stylish and not completely athletic.
